UPDATE 12/30/2007

We regret to announce that Stephen Kinzer had to canel his trip to Niaragua and the booksigning scheduled for December 5th has been canceled.

Welcome to El Gato Negro, a happy little bookstore and coffeehouse located a block from the tranquil beaches of San Juan del Sur Nicaragua. Our doors are open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

With over 3,500 books on literature, politics, commentary,  history, science, philosophy, art, home design, surfing, language instruction and more, there is something for everyone. We are proud to offer the largest selection of books on Nicaraguan politics and history in the world, with more than 240 titles.

El Gato Negro is also a bustling coffeehouse, featuring fantastic, organic Nicaraguan coffees (roasted on the premise!), European-style espresso drinks, and over 50 different teas. Our menu changes frequently, but you will always find something out of the ordinary, such as Peach Melba French Toast or Grilled Vegetables on a Ciabatta Roll. We serve breakfast, lunch, snacks, and delicious desserts. We sell our fresh roasted coffee by the bag, too.

Hang out in our swinging chairs and catch up with the latest magazines and papers from abroad. Play a game of Scrabble, or if you cannot pry the game away from Kelly, Backgammon, Cranium, Pictionary, Mille Borne, or Apples to Apples. If you are feeling creative, check out our occasional art classes. Or find the right book and head down to the beaches in search of a hammock and some shade.
